From the Ribbing Department: Yes, it’s true.  The Cubs once again are going nowhere even though Bill and Jennie were at the game last night in which they shut out the other team, albeit, the other team is worse (yes, WORSE) than the Cubs – obviously.  To rub salt in the wound, Mr. Finucane presented a little gift to one of the true sports fans …

Aktion Club is hosting their Chili Supper November 5…

Brat Party was a wonderful success.  Much food was eaten (and, according to all I’ve talked to), it was good.  Look out Food Network!

Lisa Small passed out the October Library calendar from Dee Coover.  The Big Read this year is all about Poe (as in Edgar Allan).  There is a special Poe event for practically every day in October.  There is also a Library After Dark Costume Party on October 31, with readings from Poe by the fireplace at the DeKalb Public Library.

Interclub – Special Interclub – We will host the special interclub on October 21 at noon to celebrate our 40 years as a club.  Anyone interested in helping with the details, contact Bill or Jennie Cummings.  The room can seat 200 people so let’s get as many former members there as possible (along with other club members).

Interclub the following day on Thursday, October 22, is the Annual Sycamore Pumpkin Festival Prayer Breakfast beginning at 7:00 a.m. at the Sycamore United Methodist Church

From the $$ Dept:

  • Dues will be due.  Janet Byrnes likes it when everyone pays up with perpetual reminders.

Jerry Wahlstrom says to look for any old attendance tabs you would like to recycle.  Get them to him.

Tribute To Heroes: The 7th annual dinner will be October 1, 2009, starting around 6pm, at the Kishwaukee Community College Conference Center.  Tickets are $50/person or $70 for a sponsorship.

Next Week: Will be our first board meeting at the new day and time.  Bill Cummings reminds board members to sit towards the front of the room.  The board meeting will be followed up by a program.  Also, next week, we will be visited by Marv Fogel (this is  not in reference to the E.A. Poe month) and his significant other, Robin.  If you would like to get together with Marv and Lisa on Tuesday night, go to Rosita’s around 6/6:30ish.  You’re on your own for your meal.  Let’s make sure Marv remembers how fond we are of him!  We will also be installing officers next week.  On top of that, we will be presenting a $1,000 check to VAC for them to continue their food delivery through October.

Mark Leach noted that the hospital is giving away/selling hospital beds, privacy curtains, etc.  With the cuts in the Service Agencies this year, if you know any group that would need anything like this, contact the hospital.

Peanut Day Wrap was our program today: Ken Doubler reported a very successful peanut day.  We did well in advance sales and very well on the street.  Our best corner was First and Taylor at approximately 40% of our proceeds.  Ken says this was our best year without a doubt!  We had a total of 91 man hours, of which 10 members worked on Saturday, our first Peanut Day in which we worked on Saturday.  Advance publicity was good and we had a number of our members participate.  Ken would like to see every slot filled next year.  Circle K also helped out and will receive a check once the peanut guys finish up with their accounting.  There is the slim possibility that there may be a case or two of peanuts available.  It was suggested that we give them to Marv and give him an invoice at the same time.  Actually, Marv was always a great auctioneer and we might be able to press him into service once again.  Herb and Ken did a great job this year and we appreciate their efforts as well as all who took time to pre-sell or stand outside and sell or both.  To quote Ken, “Peanut day was spectacular!”

Quote for the Day:

Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It’s not a day when you lounge around doing nothing; it’s when you’ve had everything to do, and you’ve done it. – Margaret Thatcher

Other Stuff

I will send along a list of the committees and the sign-ups so far for the 2009-2010 year.  If you have not signed up, please do so.  If you would like to change committees, now’s the time.  Return any changes to Bill Cummings.

Yearbook:  Amy is working on this.  Please look at last year’s entry for you in the yearbook.  Let Amy know if there are any changes, corrections, new cell phone #s, etc.

Our program today was introduced by Jim Barker, twice, as it turned out. Let’s just say that Gary Mack was very eager to make his presentation on NIU’s Proton Treatment and Research Center (NIPTREP).  The center represents something fairly new and fairly unique – there are only half a dozen or so proton therapy centers in the US, and only 20 worldwide.  The NIU center will be the first to integrate research, therapy, and education, building on the strength of its physics and engineering programs.  Northwestern University will provide the medical personnel needed for this center.  The center, located at the Dupage Technical Park by Fermilab, will feature a 90-ton cyclotron (currently under construction in Germany) to accelerate all those little protons.  The treatment/research/living facility will occupy 110,000 square feet.  It is estimated that approximately 1500 patients a year will be treated.  The facility will cost about $140 million, of which $13 million has already been spent.  Gary showed a video produced by our own Jim Barker, who was very proud of the fact that this was the first public presentation of a hi-def video produced by NIU Media Services.  It looked very nice (but Davis Hall was blurry!).

From the Thanks Dept:
 Coach Kill for the opportunity to speak to us.
 Clinton Rosette for the $500 for their back-to-school backpack program.

From the Tomato Dept:
 Svetlana and daughter picked 2 boxfuls of soon-to-rot tomatoes from the Clinton Rosetta planters (planted and tended for by the local Being The Change group), and donated them to Hope Haven.
 Joe G says the gardens we helped HH with, along with his church’s garden provided HH with 1600-1700 lbs of produce. Yippee!
 Tim Dunlop says Tony C. would prefer that you leave somewhat fresher tomatoes by his door. Gently. Scraping the rotten ones off the windows ruins their taste (the tomatoes’ taste – not the windows’).

Box Tops – Keep ‘em coming!

Block Party at Hopkins Park, Sun., Sept 27 from noon until 4pm.

Our Ship Has Finally Come In!! Well, maybe our small toy boat. Remember all that hullabaloo last week about 09/09/09 being lucky and buying lottery tickets so we’d all be rich, rich, rich, rich? Well, after a shopping spree, Andy reports that our vast winnings totaled (you may want to sit down for this) – are you ready? – TWELVE WHOLE DOLLARS!!!! $105 to make $12. And they said we had no minds for business. Hah!

Our program today was presented by Scott Newport, long time local farm business consultant and current DeKalb County Board member. Scott visited Cuba last March, and shared with us his thoughts and impressions of that enigmatic isle. Scott went as part of group which included a former US Sec’y of Agriculture, on an “educational” mission, which made it all legal. After the Revolution, Castro dictated that 80% of all land would be state-owned. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Cuban agriculture suffered from lack of Russian imports of fertilizer, fuel, etc. As a result, farming there today is done without chemicals, and using animal-powered machinery. One interesting in-novation – using a form of mint plant as an insecticide. Little buggers don’t like mint, apparently. On the down side, the poor nature of the feed means the cows produce only about 8 lbs of milk per day, compared to 80-100 lbs here in the US. Cuba lacks resources to farm about half its arable land. Lifting the embargo would allow the US to export wheat, corn, soy, and rice (to say nothing of fertilizers and fuel), and import sugar cane (a much better source of ethanol than corn), citrus fruits, and yes – cigars. Scott (and many others) feel that after 50+ years, maybe it’s time to acknowledge that the embargo isn’t working. As a tourist, Scott found the cities clean and crime-free, and the people well-educated and very friendly.

ANNOUNCEMENTS, EVENTS

and OPPORTUNITITES

September 10 is the United Way Day of Caring. Day of Caring is an organized day of service during which volunteers from the Board of Directors of Kishwaukee United Way, and staff from Kishwaukee United Way partner agencies visit, assist, and complete projects at one of our community’s non-profit agencies. Each agency submits requests for volunteer help on a broad variety of projects ranging from reading to children, delivering meals to the elderly, repairing and painting houses, planting gardens, and refurbishing agency offices.  For a list of projects, visit their website at www.kishwaukeeunitedway.com or contact Dawn Littlefield at Kishwaukee United Way by phone (815) 756-7522 or e-mail at dawn@kishwaukeeunitedway.com.  Also, our speaker today, Micki Emmett let us know that you can also donate blood (sponsored by the DeKalb Country Red Cross) for this event.  If you would like to set up a time to donate blood, please go to www.givebloodgivelife.org.

Bowling for fame and fortune.  If you are interested in being on the world-renown bowling team, contact one of the guys already on it and, sadly, you have to be a guy to join this team.  They didn’t announce it this week so I don’t know if they found someone.  If they did, maybe they need a sub.

In honor of it being 09/09/09, Andy Small passed around an envelope.  Those who bought in know that the first 10% of any winnings go directly to the club for our continued donations throughout the community.

VAC Golf Outing 9/18.

Brat Party is Thursday, September 24 at the Doubler abode (238 Lexington in DeKalb), 5:30 p.m. get-together with 6:00 being the official dinner time.  This is the day before peanut day so come have some fun and fellowship and chow down so you’ll have strength to get out there and distribute peanuts.  Last names of A-L are responsible for salads or side dishes; M-Z for desserts.  YUM!  If you haven’t given Ken or Sue $5.00 for this yet and have signed up, please do so.

Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26 are our Peanut Days.  This will be our first year on our own (separate from the DeKalb Club) for Peanut Day.  We have four locations (all good ones!) and we need to make sure that these locations are filled at all times.  Clear your calendars now.  We need your help!  Sign up early and often!  See Ken Doubler.  Also, if you would like to assume Joe Pasteris’ list for sponsorship …

Also on September 26 is the Egyptian Theatre’s “Ride Like an Egyptian” fund raiser.  They are looking for help with this.  If available, let Jennie Cummings know.  They are looking for SAG Wagon drivers and people to help mark the route.

October 10 (Saturday night): The Northwest Suburban Astronomers (NSA), in cooperation with the DeKalb County Forest Preserve District, will be hosting a public star party at Afton Forest Preserve.  Please bring warm clothing (nights can be chilly), insect repellant (if needed), and a flashlight covered with red plastic or cellophane (red light preserves your night vision).  The star party will begin at 6:30 p.m. (sunset is at 6:21 p.m. CDT). You can also come out early and have a picnic and hike the trails. You are welcome to bring your own telescope or binoculars. In the event of inclement weather the event will be canceled. There is no cost to attend.

Website Ad Hoc Committee:  Brian Tobin as agreed to update our “look” and is establishing an Ad Hoc Committee.  If you have interest in being on the committee (or would just like to provide input as to what you would like our website to be), contact Brian or Jennie Cummings.

Mark Leach noted that this Friday is the Castle Challenge at NIU Huskie Stadium between DeKalb and Sycamore.  Game time: 4:45 pm Sophomores / 7:30 pm Varsity / Tailgating at 4:00pm -7:30pm. Ticket information: Adult $12;
Student $6. Tickets can be purchased at Castle Bank, both high schools athletic offices or the gate.  Google Castle Challenge to find out more info.

Our program today was presented by Micki Emmett, Executive Director of the DeKalb County Red Cross.  Did you know that DeKalb County Red Cross is not eligible for state or federal funding?  Neither did she when she took the job.  They rely on donations from the county they serve to provide their five core missions.  The first is Disaster Emergency Relief.  In the case of DeKalb County, many of the emergency services provided to the residents are as a result of flooding.  Victims of fire also rate right up their for their services.  They provide vouchers for food, shelter, clothing, medicine, etc.  Second is Health and Safety Education.  They offer CPR, AED, and First Aid Classes to residents of DeKalb County.  Third is their association with the Armed Forces  / Veterans Relations.  The Red Cross relays messages to families in the service; they have blood drives for members of the service, etc.  This leads us into their fourth core mission – providing blood.  The DeKalb County Red Cross conducts blood drives (see the first item in the bulletin for Sept. 10).  Did you know that you can give blood every 56 days?  The need is great so please take the time to donate blood.  Their last core mission involves their relationship with International Services.  DeKalb County Red Cross was established on July 5, 1917 and went by the wayside for a while.  It was resurrected in the 1980s in large part by Bill Nicklas.  Over 150 DeKalb County residents receive emergency services from the Red Cross per year.  Obviously, the Red Cross has many needs and little funding.  If you would like to donate time and/or money, please contact Micki.  Also, keep your ears open.  If anyone hears of a used van they can use for an emergency vehicle .. THEY ARE IN DIRE NEED!
