Rummage Sale FUNdraiser

Rummage sale success

To the Editor:

Our Kiwanis Club’s first effort at providing a basic rummage sale for our community May 1-2 was an outstanding success. It enabled our members to donate an array of basic household items and clothing, marked at very reasonable prices.

We know the sale proved to be a big help for many of our community neighbors who took merchandise away by the sack full.

The resulting revenue, albeit modest, will give our club additional monies as we help our community through service to others.

We want to give special thanks to Mike Mooney, one of our members, who provided his body shop space. Shop manager Tim McGowan was gracious with his time and space. Abby Chemers and Jim Mitchell worked hard to price our items. Shadow Gentry was everywhere as he labored for our club, and one of our own kids, Sasha Henrikson, put in countless hours before and during the sale.

As we thank our many members who participated, we join them in thanking the community for another show of support for what we are trying to do to make our hometowns better places to live, work and raise our families.

KIWANIS  STAGES  ‘BASIC  RUMMAGE  SALE’  AT  AUTO  DEALERSHIP
A unique focus will couple with a rather unique location, when the Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club holds its first annual Basic Rummage Sale on Saturday-Sunday, May 1-2.
Kishwaukee Kiwanian Mike Mooney has agreed to open his body shop, located adjacent to his auto dealership at Fourth & Oak Streets in DeKalb, for the two-day sale.  Hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 1, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 2.
The event will feature an array of mostly-used sale items, but will deal primarily with donations that are “everyday, basic” items such as clothing, shoes, baby items, kitchen and dishware, cookbooks, and toys.  There will be a few surprise items, including Halloween lawn decorations previously used in the Kishwaukee Kiwanis Haunted House project.
While the sale will generate some funds for the service club’s community projects, Kishwaukee Kiwanis member Svetlana Henrikson said the event’s primary purpose will be to provide “affordable, everyday items for folks in need.”  Henrikson, who will co-chair the sale with Jennifer Cummings, said that most items will be priced in the $1-$5 range.  Whatever remains from the Saturday sale will be further reduced in “bargain bags,” she added.
“Our Kiwanis mission is to serve children in our communities,” Henrikson said, and what better way to do that than to provide a sale focusing on what families really need.”
This will be the club’s first venture of this kind, according to Cummings.  She indicated that a good share of this year’s donated items will come from Kishwaukee Kiwanis’ membership, but said she hoped that future events will attract donations from throughout the greater DeKalb-Sycamore community.
Persons interested in donating clothing and basic household items are encouraged to call Henrikson at 815-762-5196 or Cummings at 815-758-6873.   Other contact information on Kishwaukee Kiwanis can be found at www.kishkiwanis.org.
